Got Next: P.O.S

I discovered P.O.S on Spin magazine's 'Top 20 must hear artist from SXSW in Austin' post on their site. I was like "mann this beat is dope." Then I started paying more attention to his lyrics & I was immediately drawn into this guy. Here's a little background info on him.

P.O.S was born in Minneapolis as Stefon Alexander, where everybody still calls him Stef. As a little kid, he developed a fascination with an older cousin’s bass guitar. Stef was allowed to take it home and he banged on it happily for years before realizing that it was intended to be played through an amp. “I just thought it was supposed to be a quiet instrument.” As a teenager, he fell hard for punk rock. Minor Threat, At the Drive-In, Refused, Kid Dynamite. He played in a series of hardcore bands, sometimes as a drummer, sometimes on guitar and vocals. From the start, he preferred basement shows to club gigs. Simultaneously, he pursued hip hop, rapping in the hallways and after school with classmates who would eventually found Doomtree Records. P.O.S released his first rap record, Ipecac Neat, on Doomtree in 2003. After signing with Rhymesayers shortly after, it was quickly released and widely distributed on Rhymesayers Entertainment. The album earned P.O.S a dedicated following of critics and underground fans. Two years later they devoured his melodic sophomore release Audition, which featured collaborations with heavyweights like Slug from Atmosphere; Craig Finn of The Hold Steady; and Greg Attonito of The Bouncing Souls. On the verge of his third release, with his trajectory unchecked, P.O.S still doesn’t take himself too seriously. He doesn’t sweat the musical trends. He locks himself in his bedroom studio until the early hours of the morning, emerges with a song, and couldn’t care less how someone else would have gone about it.

Yep so he sounds like the type of rappers I enjoy. Don't give a f&*k about what anyone else is doing, he just does his own thing

Check out his video for 'Optimist' which recently premiered on MTV2 & MTVU. It's dope!

If you like what you saw listen to more of his tracks.

Got Next:Jupiter Rising

They have that pop/soul type vibe going on & im diggin' it. I spotted them over at Nylon, visited their myspace & liked what I heard so I decided to do a post on them.

Growing up in Sacramento, he started out on saxophone at age 9. Spencer also took up beat-boxing, and loved underground hip-hop and club grooves. By the time he got to college, he’d shared stages with Busta Rhymes and The Clipse. Spencer started out studying International Business. But when he saw what Pharrell Williams had achieved with the boundary-pushing productions of the Neptunes, he decided to go for it.
Jessie Payo ran around the house singing show tunes and classic rock as a little girl in the Los Angeles area. But by the time she was 13, her natural talent was so pronounced she was fronting a band that went on to play the blues circuit for the next decade.
Momentum has been building around Jupiter Rising even since the group’s inception. The 2006 single “Go!” was a Billboard dance hit, and featured prominently in multiple movies and commercials, while their hit song “Electropop” has received over a million plays on MySpace. They have opened for The Black Eyed Peas and Lupe Fiasco, and their music has also popped up everywhere from sporting events to MTV’s Making the Band.

Gabriella Cilmi Pictures, Images and Photos
I remember hearing her song somewhere but I forget where. Nylon reminded me how good she was. She's also good lookin'.

Cilmi was born in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong. At an early age Cilmi developed an interest in a wide range of musical styles including Nina Simone, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, The Sweet, T.Rex and Cat Stevens. In 2004 Cilmi captured the attention of Warner Music executive Michael Parisi whilst giving an impromptu rendition of the Rolling Stones' song "Jumping Jack Flash" at the Lygon Street Festa, a community festival in Melbourne. At the age of thirteen Cilmi travelled to the US and UK with Adrian Hannan and was offered four major US deals. She eventually signed a contract with Island Records UK. She is now 17 & still doing her thing.

Got Next: Designer Drugs

Photobucket

I wouldn't say that they "Got Next" because they are professional remixers but they're worth the mention!

American electronic music duo consisting of Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson. The name Designer Drugs is derived from the term used to describe psychoactive drugs made by underground chemists in order to create street drugs that are not specifically listed as controlled substances. The group is most commonly known for their remixes, but in October 2008 released their debut single "Zombies!" and "Back Up In This" for Franki Chan's record label.

Here's a video for their song "Zombies". WARNING it's extra sketch

Got Next: The Noisettes

The Noisettes Pictures, Images and Photos

College exam week is a really stressful time, trust me. To cope with all those late night studying hours I watched DirectTv all night long, and I saw this band on the 101 channel that has all the new shit on at weird hours of the night...

p.s. this is my first Got Next so feel free to critique =]

The Noisettes have toured Europe and the United States extensively, with the likes of TV on the Radio, Tom Vek, Babyshambles, Bloc Party and the Mystery Jets. They supported Muse on a UK and European arena tour in November and December 2006, and toured the UK to promote the release of their debut album What's the Time Mr. Wolf? in February 2007. The Noisettes also appeared at the Coachella festival in 2007 and performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August. The Noisettes also made their US television debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in April 2007. Shingai Shoniwa, the lead singer has provided backing vocals for many bands including Guillemots songs "Made Up Love Song #43" and "Over the Stairs". The Noisettes song, "Scratch Your Name" was featured on the finale episode of The Sopranos in 2007.

Got Next: Chromeo

I've been on these guys for almost a year now. I seen their video for "Fancy Footwork" on Kanye's blog site & I immediately fell in love with their music & image. I always said that I would put people on them if ever I got a blog & that day has come.Chromeo is P-Thugg and Dave 1: best friends since their adolescence, virtuoso musicians, walking hip hop encyclopedias, and the only successful Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture. After spending the three years since the release of their debut album, She’s In Control, jet setting, globetrotting, and embarking on an overall sensual conquest of planet Earth, Chromeo headed back to their Montreal lab to put together album number deux. Their a mixture of pop & ghetto tech. Their sound reminds me a little of Eddie Murphy's "Party all the time".

Got Next: Edan

Photobucket
I discoverd this guy about a year ago. Edan Portnoy is an American alternative hip hop artist, based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an emcee, DJ and record producer.
He is known for his eclectic mix of classic mid-80s till early 90s hip hop with 60s rock, funk and other styles. I dont really know how to describe his style. It's def. hip hop though. You can tell this guy listened to some old school hip hop before he picked up the mic. I can hear a Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee & KRS-1 in him.

Got Next:DarkSyde Yakusa Republic

Photobucket
Are you intrigued by weird things? Well keep on reading " Yakuza Japanese has unique grammatical structures, unusual pronunciation, and a colorful vocabulary. " Started in the home of founder Aknahlij'd 1 aka Jizzle aka Percussion Junkie Shuttlecock aka Skipp McGillian. Thhe group was at first a threesome composed of the mighty AKN and former members Boss aka David Simmons and Michael Flot aka....idk epidemik or some other kind of odd misspelling of the word. Regardless, via a realization of lack of skill around him, the mighty one moved on and found solice in a close friend in Tyronne Augusta aka Pathejenik aka the millions of other discarded nicknames that came and went. These two along with the mascot work of Boss made rumblings around the internet poetry circles, mainly on eliteskills.com where they would eventually form the third incarnation of the DYR with friends Troy Baham and Chaz Simms, whom Path attended high school with.

Got Next: Sia

sia Pictures, Images and Photos
I was so mad when I seen Kanye post her on his blog today!
I saved this as a draft yesterday. I been had intentions on posting her but I love her sound! Here's a background on her: She's an Australian pop singer, most famous for her three major label solo albums. Sia Furler, born in Adelaide, South Australia, was part of the Australian acid jazz formation, Crisp, which released two albums entitled Word and the Deal and Delirium. Sia later released her own solo album entitled OnlySee in 1997 on a now-defunct independent record label.
This is a real cool video & song

Got Next: The Knux

Photobucket
Comprised of brothers Krispy Kream and Rah Al Millio, the Knux are a clever alternative rap duo who are musicians as well as singer/rappers. Born in New Orleans yet displaced by Hurricane Katrina, the musically schooled brothers began creating a stir nationally in late 2007 when they were the opening act for Common on his Finding Forever tour. Dressed in throwback Adidas zip-ups, fat gold chains, and altogether atypical contemporary rap attire, the Knux performed with a live band (the Symetrics) and DJ (DJ Cobra) and frequently left crowds puzzled and occasionally booing. Once the Knux were signed to Interscope Records, however, attitudes changed as tastemakers began taking note -- first and foremost bloggers, who were quick to champion the duo and point out its affiliation with rap industry power broker Paul Rosenberg, the manager of Eminem. The brothers' MySpace page in turn began getting heavy traffic in lieu of any commercially available music. "Cappuccino" was the first Knux song officially released by Interscope, beginning with an appearance in an episode of the fourth season of the HBO show Entourage; a video for the song was subsequently filmed.
